Welcome back Room 14 families!! We are back on track with our normal homework schedule as of today. New math homework will go home on Thursday (1/11) & I have updated the class website with the reading & P.E. homework for this week. Happy New Year!!
As we approach Parent/Teacher conference time, I would like to give you enough time to sign up for a conference meeting date & time so that you can make any necessary arrangements. Please go to the following link to schedule your date/time. I will send home more information regarding conferences next week on Wednesday 11/8. goo.gl/E7i4qK
After a meeting with our AVID Coordinators & the other 4th grade teachers, it has been decided that students will be given the choice about whether or not to take their entire AVID binders back & forth to home with them. Students will still be taking their agendas home each day to get signed, but that is all that is required of them.
There was mixed reaction in our class when I announced this today. MANY students felt that their binders really help them to stay organized, keep track of their things, and be successful here at school. Therefore, many students decided to keep carrying them around. I was impressed & very proud at the level of maturity that decision took! Some students took the option & are now only going home with their agendas. Some other students opted for the security of a Homework Folder that they could still use to carry their homework back & forth. Since many of them rely on their binders for their homework, they felt this was a good compromise. So, your child may now only have their agenda & their new homework folder. I did caution those students who chose to leave their binder here: if they start forgetting their homework or other materials, they will be asked to start carrying their binder again. I think this is a great way for students to take accountability for their own learning & their own needs. It's a great way for them to exercise some control over their belongings. Finally, it's a small, but significant, step toward being a more responsible student
We originally had a math quiz planned for this Friday (tomorrow), but it turns out I got a little mixed up & I scheduled the quiz too early thinking we had covered all of the material. Turns out there are still 2 more lessons covered on the quiz, so it will be postponed until next week! That just means more time to study :-)
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!! WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS ARE HERE!! These aren't just any old newspapers, though... these ones are written by the students in Room 14! Today I introduced the class to an exciting extension opportunity that can help them earn BIG POINTS for their House in the monthly House Cup - the Weekly Newspaper! This optional assignment is a fun way for your child to practice their reading, writing, and listening skills while staying connected to various current events all around the globe! Not only that, but it's also a weekly opportunity to earn up to 100 House points for their House for our monthly House Cup. So how does it work? Every Friday, a new Weekly Newspaper assignment will show up on your child's Google Classroom stream. Step-by-step instructions for completing the Newspaper will be included, as well as the following items
No matter what, just attempting to do the Weekly Newspaper means a BUNCH of points for their House :-) About the "Week in Rap, Jr." videos from Flocabulary -- We use Flocabulary A LOT in our classroom. It's all just video after video of educational content presented in the form of hip-hip songs!! The class absolutely LOVES Flocabulary & so do I! Their "Week in Rap, Jr." videos are posted weekly on Fridays & provide a quick overview of some of the world's current events. All of the videos are designed to be age-appropriate (intended for 3rd-5th graders) & are accompanied by short Paired Reading Passages that provide a little more detail about each news story... again at an age appropriate level. They are a fantastic way to get students to feel connected to the global community & to spark discussions about our school-wide focus on Empathy. I believe this can be an enriching experience for all of my students.... but also you too!! I don't require that students complete their Weekly Newspapers on their own, so why not get involved?! You could watch the videos & read the passages together. You could talk about your own feelings & beliefs in regards to the current events you learn about. There is always a question for reflection & discussion at the end... you could each share your own responses to the question! Not only will you be aiding with skills critical to success in ELA & other subjects, but you'll be supporting critical thinking and speaking & listening skills ALL while creating personal, family meaning & connection to the current events of the world. Of course, all work would need to be done in your child's own words, but that doesn't mean that you can't be involved :-) As always, please let me know if you have any questions are concerns. Below you can find my teacher-made example as well as a 100 point student example.
Your child was sent home today with a progress report for Math! As well as all of the graded math work they have done so far this year. The progress reports list their current performance in math, along with a detailed list of graded assignments that are now in the grade book on Illuminate Home Connect.
Math homework is a little different this week as I give many students the opportunity to make up any work that they are missing. Any students who have assignments listed under the "Missing Assignments" list on their progress report have the whole week (until Wednesday, 9/27) to complete their missing work & turn it in. They were all provided with new copies of the work so that they can complete it. Any students who are not missing any assignments have a "freebie week" with no required math homework. Tomorrow (9/21) I will be sending home login information for the program Zearn. They have the option of working on Zearn throughout the week - paying special attention to the lessons & skills they have struggled most with so far in class. |
